FOCUS AREAS
|
Land Acquisition Funding from the Pinelands Conservation Fund will be focused on the following areas: |
| 18 PLANNING AREAS and SECTION 502 TARGET AREAS |
In 2001, the Pinelands Commission identified 20 Planning Areas that encompass the most environmentally sensitive regions that have not been permanently protected from development. Two of these Planning Areas have been the subject of Sub-Regional Plans. The remaining 18 Planning Areas are eligible for funding from the Pinelands Conservation Fund.
The 502 Target Areas consist of 20 locations encompassing approximately 100,000 acres officially designated by the Pinelands Commission as having critical cultural and ecological resources that should be preserved. "Section 502" refers to section 502 of the1978 National Parks and Recreation Act, which authorized $23,000,000 for property acquisition in these locations of the Pinelands. This amount was later increased to $40,500,000. Of the original 100,000 acres identified as 502 areas, approximately 30,000 remain to be preserved. |
| $2,500,000 of the PCF will be used to preserve land in the 18 Planning Areas and the 502 Target Areas. |
| SUB-REGIONAL PLANNING AREAS |
Two of the original 20 Planning Areas were the focus of sub-regional planning efforts undertaken by the Commission and task forces of experts: Toms River and Southern Medford/ Evesham. The Pinelands Commission dedicated $3,000,000 to Land Acquisition projects within these areas.
$1 million of this amount is allocated to the Toms River Plan and $2 million is allocated to the Southern Medford Evesham Planning Area. |
| CONTINGENCY PROJECTS |
The Pinelands Commission also realized the opportunistic nature of Land Acquisition and decided to dedicate $500,000 to contingency projects. These projects can be located within the Preservation Area, Special Agricultural Production Area, Agricultural Production Area, and/or Forest Area. This funding may also be used to supplement highly significant projects that fall within the Planning Areas, the Section 502 Target Areas and/or the Sub Regional Planning Areas.
