The Elwood Corridor has been an area of preservation focus for New Jersey Conservation Foundation for over a decade. The 70-acre Darmstadt Avenue Preserve represents one of the largest tracts of undeveloped land in one ownership within the Mullica Township portion of the Elwood Corridor.
The Elwood Corridor is an ecologically critical strip of forest that connects the northern Preservation Area of the Pinelands with the southern Pine Barrens. The Pine Barrens plan identifies the Elwood Corridor as very important, but because it is crossed by three major east-west highways and is dotted with existing villages, the plan protects only a narrow portion of the corridor. As a result, the Elwood Corridor faces significant development pressure.
The Darmstadt Avenue Preserve contains a large Atlantic white cedar swamp which follows Indian Cabin Creek, a tributary to the Mullica River. It also contains uplands that have significant development potential. These uplands have soils that have great groundwater recharge capacity.
