PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE

Protecting South Jersey's Arts and Music Haven from Encroaching Development

Appel Farm Arts and Music Center is a non-profit regional arts center located near the village of Elmer in Upper Pittsgrove Township, Salem County.  Appel Farm is a much needed venue for adults and children to experience the arts through concerts, summer camp, art classes and outreach and conference programs.  The Center is in its 47th year of operation, serves over 55,000 children and families through its programs and is designated by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts as a "Major Presenting Organization", ranking it among the anchor cultural institutions in the State of New Jersey for achieving standards of artistic, programmatic and financial excellence.

Appel Farm is within close proximity to several thousand acres of Preserved Farmland. While most of the the property consists of open fields, a wooded river corridor protects the Palatine Branch of the Muddy Run, which eventually flows into the Maurice River. The wooded stream corridor and hedgerows on Appel Farm contain trees and native vegetation typical of Southern New Jersey including enormous willow oaks.

Although a significant amount of Farmland Preservation has occurred in Upper Pittsgrove Township, residential development is still a constant threat.  Appel Farm would like to expand its property by 46 acres, thereby buffering it from the threat of encroachment.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Appel Farm would like to purchase a 46-acre property located across Shirley Road from their main facility.  They are currently under negotiations with the landowner and hope to have an option contract shortly.
